Finally, these two are retiring!

Referees Ed Hochuli and Jeff Triplette retiring

Posted by Darin Gantt on March 6, 2018, 12:33 PM EST

NFL teams aren’t the only ones going through personnel change this offseason, and replacing veterans with young talent.

The league office is doing the same, with its most high-profile referee walking away as his son walks in.

NFL senior vice president of officiating Al Riveron just tweeted out word that longtime refs Ed Hochuli and Jeff Triplette were retiring, and were being replaced in the rotation by former back judge Shawn Hochuli and side judge Alex Kemp.

The 67-year-old Hochuli, best known for his tight shirts, big arms and verbose explanations of rulings on nationally televised games, has been with the league since 1990. He’s been the league’s longest-tenured ref since 2007.

Triplette has been with the league since 1996, and hasn’t been as decorated as Hochuli. Regrettably, he’s probably best known as the official who threw the flag which injured former Ravens tackle Orlando Brown, as the flag accidentally hit Brown in the eye.

Triplette has needed to go for several years now. His crew has made so many blunders and just flat out blown calls that affected the outcome of many games.

Hochuli, I used to like Ed. But he grew to really like the sound of his own voice a bit too much. I see he is being replaced by Shawn Hochuli.....I bet that is is son. Seems Nepotism isn't just in the coaching ranks either.

If they do put Hochuli in the Booth they will have to extend the playing time to 4 1/2 hours to cover all the explanations! or drop the 4th quarter and go to a three period game like Hockey.

I'm going to kind of miss Ed Hochuli. Some of his explanations of rulings were kind of funny. And he took no guff, cause he had the stuff.

People think I am paranoid because I have so many guns. If I have guns, what do I need to be paranoid about?

Hochuli always thought of himself as the smartest guy in the room.  If he ever played football he probably had to quit because they couldn't  find a helmet big enough to fit his self inflated f'n head in.  Bigger than the game. Glad to see him retire.

He was, probably what led to the lengthy explanations!

Ed is a Lawyer in the off season. Not sure what his specialty is, but I bet it involves long in-depth explanations of why his client isn't a scum bag.
