Ex-Bears around the league

Bills right tackle Jordan Mills allowed seven sacks last season and was penalized seven times, including four holds, and the Bills spent a second-round pick on tackle Dion Dawkins.

Mills, though, has had “one heck of an offseason,” according to coach Sean McDermott.

Center Eric Wood vouched for Mills with the new coaching staff, and the Bills re-signed Mills to a two-year, $4 million contract in March.

“I think he’s been playing better and better, and he’ll continue to develop as a player,” Wood said, via Vic Carucci of The Buffalo News.

Mills’ continued development will serve as good news for the Bills at the tackle position. They released Cyrus Kouandjio late last month, and Seantrel Henderson will miss the first five games of the season while finishing his suspension for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy.

Bears 5th round Pick in 2013 is still having great off-seasons in the league. Seems we heard that every year he was a Bear.

The Panthers have added a new member to their coaching staff and he comes with ties to several members of the organization.

The team announced that former Florida International head coach and longtime NFL assistant Ron Turner will be a consultant to the coaching staff. Turner’s son Cameron is the Panthers’ assistant quarterbacks coach and the elder Turner was on Bears coaching staffs with head coach Ron Rivera, defensive coordinator Steve Wilks, offensive coordinator Mike Shula and defensive line coach Eric Washington.

“He’ll work closely with the offense as far as evaluating the things that we’re doing, evaluating our opponents,” Rivera said in a statement. “And then he’ll also do some stuff for Steve Wilks, looking at what we’re doing and explaining how people might try to attack our defense.”

Turner served as the offensive coordinator for the Bears from 1993-96 and again from 2005-09 with a run as the head coach of the University of Illinois between the two stints. He coached current Panthers tight end Greg Olsen during the second stint, which also featured the Bears’ appearance in Super Bowl XLI. He worked with the Colts and Buccaneers after leaving the Bears and before spending three-plus years at FIU.

The Ex-Bears OC seems to be helping out his son in Pantherland. Hopefully he left his playbook in Florida. I think his son would be better served to get his Uncle to help him out at work, sorry Dad no hard feelings? It Business not personal.

The New York Jets have signed free-agent wide receiver Marquess Wilson, according to a Tuesday afternoon statement released by the sports management agency, Reign Sports. However, the firm did not reveal the length or financial terms surrounding the newly inked pact, which is nothing out of the ordinary.

It is also worth noting that the 24-year-old pass catcher became an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his career this offseason. Prior to apparently landing in the “Big Apple” as a member of the struggling Jets, Wilson previously suited up for the Chicago Bears. Spending his entire four-year NFL career in the “Windy City” as it stands today, the up-and-coming wide receiver was originally selected by the Bears in the seventh round of the 2013 NFL Draft out of Washington State.

I wish Wilson good luck. Didn't seem to have much of that with the Bears!

Three questions sparked after the New England Patriots signed linebacker David Harris ...

Shea McClellin played 34.5 percent of the defensive snaps last season, and he should have trade value before he would become a cap casualty. The Patriots are in substitution packages about 80 percent of the time, and McClellin's versatile skill set can be tapped in specific game plans against offenses that might trend more to the pass. In a recent practice, McClellin showed his athleticism by jamming a running back before dropping back into coverage and intercepting Tom Brady. That type of play is how I envision McClellin's fit on the team: almost like a passing-game linebacker.

There were flashes of promise during wide receiver Marquess Wilson’s time with the Bears that made some think he could be a factor for them offensively, but Wilson’s time in Chicago was ultimately defined more than time off the field due to injuries than anything he did on it.

His attempt to turn that around as a member of the Jets ended on Wednesday. The Jets announced Wilson has been dropped from the 90-man roster days after he didn’t play at all in the team’s second preseason game.

Wilson was a seventh-round pick for the Bears in 2013 and caught 56 passes for 777 yards and three touchdowns while playing in 31 games over four years. Those 31 games made him the most experienced receiver on the Jets’ roster heading into camp, but Wilson missed time with a hip injury that helped seal his fate.

The Jets signed tight end Brandon Barnes to fill the open roster spot. Barnes signed with the Lions as an undrafted free agent this year and was waived by Detroit earlier this month.

He went in the 7th round not only because of him quitting his college team, but also due to his slight stature. He was considered b< most to be just too slim to play in the NFL. This has proved to be the case, if you are not sufficiently built to withstand the abuse that you receive on the field, you will end up hurt most of the time.

I still wish him luck, he always seemed like a good kid.

Report: Jets have gauged Matt Forte trade market

Running back Matt Forte is the rare Jets veteran who wasn’t cast aside this offseason, but the team may still be looking to part ways with him before the start of the regular season.

Tom Pelissero of NFL Media reports that the team has gauged the trade market for Forte, who ran 10 times for 43 yards in his preseason debut last Saturday. Forte had missed time this summer with a hamstring injury, but showed he’s recovered against the Giants.

Forte ran 218 times for 813 yards and seven touchdowns while also catching 30 passes in his first season with the Jets. That production might be appealing to teams looking for a veteran in the backfield, but his $4 million guaranteed salary likely limits some of that appeal. It’s not clear if the Jets would consider simply releasing Forte if they are unable to find a trading partner, although the possibility may also keep the trade talks from heating up.

Bilal Powell and rookie Elijah McGuire would be the next men up in the backfield if Forte does depart.
