Former Cowboys Bears running back Marion Barber found dead in his apartment

Posted by Charean Williams on June 1, 2022, 7:26 PM EDT

Police in Frisco, Texas, found former Cowboys running back Marion Barber dead in his apartment Wednesday, Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.

The cause of death is not yet known.

“Officers are currently out on a welfare concern, but we are unable to provide any further information at this time,” a Frisco police spokesperson told Hill.

Barber was 38.

“We are heartbroken by the tragic death of Marion Barber III,” the Cowboys said in a statement. “Marion was an old-school, hard-nosed football player who ran with the will to win every down. He had a passion for the game and love for his coaches and teammates. Our hearts go out to Marion’s family and friends during this difficult time.”

The Cowboys made Barber a fourth-round choice in 2005, and he played six of his seven seasons in Dallas. His final season came in Chicago in 2011.

Barber made the Pro Bowl in 2007 when he rushed for a career-best 975 yards and scored 10 rushing touchdowns. He did not start a game that season while splitting time with starter Julius Jones.

He finished his career with 4,780 rushing yards and 53 rushing touchdowns.

Marion Barber is also famous for running out of bounds instead of staying inbounds to run out the clock against the Broncos. This allowed the Tim Tebow Legend to grow as the Bears failed to stop the Tebow Bus from scoring. (Thank you Bend but don't Break Defense) Bears ended up losing a game that should have been sealed, with the clock left running on third down.

Rest in Peace, Marion.

Former Cowboys and Bears Running Back Marion Barber III Has Died at 38

June 1, 2022, by Brett Taylor Chicago Bears

Former Dallas Cowboys running back – and for one year, a Chicago Bears running back – Marion Barber III has been found dead in his Dallas-area apartment. He was just 38 years old.

There are no details at this time on a cause of death or any other surrounding circumstances. Thoughts are with his family, friends, and those who remember his playing days fondly. I was among them, as I remember watching him from college on into the NFL.

Barber was a star in college at Minnesota, and then a long-time Cowboys running back from 2005 to 2010 (Pro Bowler in 2007).  He finished his playing career with the Bears in 2011 at age 28. This story is just so sad.

Per the report, Barber fell on hard times after his retirement, with some mental health and legal issues. His former teammate Dez Bryant posted about Barber’s challenges on Twitter last year:

Former Dallas Cowboys running back Marion Barber III has died at the age of 38, the team announced Wednesday.

"We are heartbroken by the tragic death of Marion Barber III," the team said in a statement. "Marion was an old school, hard-nosed football player who ran with the will to win every down. He had a passion for the game and love for his coaches and teammates. Our hearts go out to Marion's family and friends during this difficult time."

Frisco, Texas, police found Barber dead in his apartment Wednesday, per the Fort-Worth Star Telegram. The cause of death is not yet known.

"Frisco Police responded to a welfare concern at an apartment believed to be leased by Marion Barber," Police spokesperson Joshua Lovell told the Star-Telegram. "Frisco Police along with the Collin County Medical Examiner's Office are investigating an unattended death at the location."

Barber, who would have turned 39 on June 10, was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the fourth round of the 2005 NFL Draft. Barber spent seven seasons in the NFL, six with the Cowboys from 2005-2010 and one with the Chicago Bears in 2011. He made the Pro Bowl in 2007 while with the Cowboys.

He finished his career with 4,780 rushing yards and 53 rushing touchdowns to go along with 1,330 receiving yards and six receiving touchdowns.

In his post-football life, Barber dealt with legal troubles. Police detained Barber in 2014, an incident that resulted in him going to the hospital for a mental health evaluation. In 2019, he was arrested on two misdemeanor criminal mischief charges.

He was found dead in his shower with the water still running. He had been there for days. His neighbors complained that water was running out of his apartment. Cause of death is unknown partly due to the decomposition of his body. He had been in a hot shower for days, this accelerated the decomposition process. This is really sad to see this happen to someone. His will states to not remove his brain for CTE study and his family are abiding by his wishes. Though Doctors stated his brain is most likely unusable for the study due to the amount of degradation from decomp.

Report: Marion Barber died from heat stroke

Posted by Charean Williams on July 11, 2022, 5:59 PM EDT

The Collin County medical examiner’s office ruled Marion Barber III died from a heat stroke, Jori Epstein of USA Today reports.

Frisco, Texas, police found the former Cowboys running back dead inside his apartment June 1 while conducting a welfare check. Barber was 38.

One of the bathtub faucets in Barber’s apartment was running when officers arrived, according to the autopsy report obtained by Epstein, and the unit’s thermostat was set to 91 degrees with the heat set to “on.” Officers also found exercise equipment in the unit.

“Mr. Barber was known to exercise in sauna-like conditions,” the coroner wrote in his report.
