David Montgomery injury not as serious as anticipated
0

*****

When Montgomery was originally helped off the field, the look on his face signaled major concern. He winced in pain. It was an unusual sight to see on the face of a player known to be one of the tougher backs in the game.

Prior to exiting, Montgomery had carried the ball 23 times for 106 yards and two touchdowns.

Initially, it appeared as though Montgomery could have suffered a significant and, maybe, season-ending injury. Of course, right away, no one knew just what had happened. However, according to experts, it looks like he avoided such a scare.

Chicago Bears running back David Montgomery appears to have avoided the worst-case scenario for his knee injury.

Bears don’t believe RB David Montgomery tore his ACL, but they are doing further testing today to determine the extent of the injury, per source.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter is just one of a few experts to state that Montgomery likely avoided a major injury. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport also reported as such late on Sunday night.

Probably the most important person to chime in on the injury, though, was Dr. David Chao, also known as “Pro Football Doc.”

Dr. Chao tweeted on Sunday that the video looked like a left MCL sprain — and he’s rarely wrong. If Chao is right, then Montgomery certainly comes out of this less scathed than everyone originally anticipated.

At first glance, Montgomery was in severe pain and grabbing his knee. That’s typically a dead giveaway. Fans immediately assumed it was an ACL injury — and justifiably so, as we’ve seen that face and motion from plenty of guys who have endured such an injury in the past.

The Bears will do further testing on Monday, and hopefully we get a positive update. Montgomery will probably miss a little time if it’s not as serious, and in the meantime we will see former Super Bowl hero Damien Williams take over as the lead back.

Early returns on tests suggest the injury is a hyperextended knee, and, apparently not a major injury. That breeze you felt was a sigh of relief from Bears fans, players, coaches, executives, and anyone who roots on No. 32 for Chicago’s football team. Obviously, more tests will provide a full scope. But the initial belief isn’t one of total doom, and that’s silver lining I’ll gladly accept.

But we’re not out of the woods just yet. Depending on the severity of the injuries suffered by Montgomery and Damien Williams (quad), the Bears could be down their top three running backs (Tarik Cohen remains on IR while recovering from an ACL injury that happened in Week 3 last year).

The Bears’ healthy running backs are rookie Khalil Herbert and practice squad player Ryan Nall. Based on the lack of depth at that position, I imagine the Bears will be looking to bring in some players on a tryout basis in preparation of scenarios that merit the team searching for help.

Good news if true, but I still don't see him playing next week. Going to be a tough game without him.

Hopefully it turns out like last season....Monty came back much sooner than expected....because he's a quick healer.

Kahlil came in and ran strong at the end. He also looked very good in the pre-season. O hope the BEars bring in someone and do not try to rely on Nall. Do not get me wrong, but Nall is just not good enough to play with the ones. He always seems to bust a big one against the 3s in the preseason, but disappears against alevel talent.

Waiting for David to return will be hard. My hope is one of the other running backs steps up to the plate, and demonstrates they just needed chance to demonstrate their value.

Kahlil Herbert is going to get his big chance to shine. Kid looked good in the Pre-Season and his few reps last Sunday. Ran with power and aggression.
