Roster Moves: Bears sign OL Redmond, waive OL Cervenka

May 19, 2021 at 10:06 AM

Larry Mayer

Bears Senior Writer

The Bears on Wednesday signed guard/center Adam Redmond and waived undrafted rookie guard Gage Cervenka.

Redmond has appeared in 18 NFL games, all as a reserve, for the Indianapolis Colts (2017) and Dallas Cowboys (2018 and 2020).

The 6-6, 300-pounder, who turns 27 Wednesday, entered the NFL in 2016 as an undrafted free agent with the Colts from Harvard. He spent part of his rookie year on the practice squad before appearing in the first four games of the 2017 season.

After being waived by the Colts, Redmond was signed to the Buffalo Bills practice squad later in 2017. He then joined the Cowboys in 2018, appearing in a career-high 10 games. He rejoined Dallas in 2020, playing in four games, and was waived by the Cowboys earlier this month.

Redmond has been assigned jersey No. 62, while receiver Chris Lacy, who signed with the Bears Sunday after participating in last weekend's rookie minicamp on a tryout basis, will wear No. 18. In addition, undrafted rookie defensive lineman Thomas Schaffer has switched from No. 62d to 69d.

Good to see Pace and the FO still churning the roster. This is that time of year to keep cultivating that depth chart and looking for over looked gems. Bears O-Line has been stuck with limited potential and lack of movement in its makeup. The Status Quo is not always in the best interest of the team. Comfort with your roster is fine when it is a top performing unit, but not when it is weak and ineffective room top to bottom. Pace brought in some decent vets last season and seems to be working through the young unproven guys now to improve that room as a whole.

Drafted two new tackles, cut two underachieving veterans, re-signing decent veterans and churning the lower ranks are all signs that maybe the Bears have finally understood that their weakness was o-line and not just missing a big Receiver or a new QB away from winning.

Bears acquire WR Jakeem Grant in trade with Dolphins

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported that the Miami Dolphins traded wide receiver Jakeem Grant for a 2023 sixth-round pick, per sources informed of the situation.

The shifty wideout also returns kicks and punts.

You are probably right Cob. I wonder if Cohen still needs another procedure? He has had an additional procedure since the initial surgery. Maybe it will take a year from the last procedure to be close to healing. Tarik could be helpful to Fields on third down.
