Game 1: Bears - Panthers

I doubt I will get to see it tonight, but I understand it will be aired at 10:00am PT on NFL Network so hopefully I can catch it then.

The Chicago Bears kick off their 2019 preseason schedule against the Carolina Panthers Thursday night in a game that will offer fans a closer look at the depth of this roster heading into September.......Starters aren’t expected to play much if at all this summer, and the extra reps will provide backups and bubble players an opportunity to prove to GM Ryan Pace that they have something to offer on the 53-man squad.

Montgomery will be the main draw Thursday night. He’s the reason most Bears fans will get excited for the game, especially with the lack of star power that’s expected to suit up for either side...........It’ll be interesting to see if Mike Davis gets some playing time, too.

The star of last year’s preseason is ready to reclaim his title. Wims has enjoyed a fantastic training camp and appears locked into the final roster at this point. Still, he’s blocked by four players on the depth chart and in order to secure regular season playing time, he needs to make a statement.

............ I couldn't really sum up my thoughts on tonights game any better than this:

Bernstein: What Matters In A Bears Exhibition Game

-- Take note of who's held out entirely, in street clothes out of the locker room. It's an indication of how important coach Matt Nagy thinks they are to the team this season, a sign of status.

...........it's about not getting hurt. Don't get hurt.

Dan Bernstein says it best.

I want to see what the Iowa Cyclone, Mr. Montgomery does tonight.

Interested in how Duke Shelley looks on the field.....

And if there is anything to get excited about with the UDFA TEs!

Bernstein: What Matters In A Bears Exhibition Game

Rule No. 1: Don't let anyone important get hurt.

******

Pretty much sums it up right there! Nagy proved last year that a team can succeed with minimal playing time in preseason.

******

Even with such caveats, however, I'm interested in a few things regarding this roster that could be affected by a performance or two.

-- Take note of who's held out entirely, in street clothes out of the locker room. It's an indication of how important coach Matt Nagy thinks they are to the team this season, a sign of status.

Mack, Hicks, Jackson, Fuller, Goldman... actually, just sit the whole 1st string defense.

-- We'll see if kickers can make kicks, in situations not just simulated by coaches.

What is the weather supposed to be?

-- If rookie running back David Montgomery plays, it's our first chance to see him get chased around by non-teammates.

I am the most excited to see how both him and Davis looks against guys not on his team.

-- There could be big concern at tight end if the mystery surrounding Trey Burton's recent setback doesn't clear up soon and positively and if Adam Shaheen is some combination of hurt and bad. Undrafted free agents Dax Raymond or Ian Bunting merit some attention. Bradley Sowell is also at this position now.

Ehh, TE is a mess. maybe it will clear up by mid season.

-- Same goes for depth players in the defensive secondary. Duke Shelley, Stephen Denmark and John Franklin III will battle to see who might stick as a backup and core special teamer and who gets stashed on the practice squad.

I still think Franklin will be starting across from Fuller some time this season. I hope I am right, cause Prince becomes way to expensive next year.

What else are you guys hoping to see?

Train like you are 2nd, but play like you are 1st.

Weather forecast from the flatlands......

Should be in low 80s to start the game, upper 70s at the finish. Humidity shouldn't be too bad.....it's been relatively nice for mid- August. And just a nice slight breeze of 5 mph or less.....should be a good guage of who can kick successfully under normal Soldier Field conditions!

And the beer will be chilled to a perfect 33°!!! wink

I can't see the game tonight but saw some highlights on NFL.com and NFL network so far.  The Flatlander looks real good running the rock.  Roquan Smith should not be out there imo, but damn!  That boy is a freakun beast...... nice sack.  One FG missed by Pienaro, one made by Fry.
