Champ Kelly, Scott Fitterer accept New York Jets GM interview requests

With Mike Maccagnan out, the New York Jets general manager position remains vacant. On Tuesday, two individuals have accepted formal interview requests for the prestigious football position.

Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated reports that Champ Kelly and Scott Fitterer are two men slated for interviews.

“The Jets’ GM search will rev up this week,” Breer claims. “I’m told it remains unclear if Minnesota exec George Paton will accept the interview, but both Chicago’s Champ Kelly and Seattle’s Scott Fitterer are going to meet with the Jets. Fitterer’s interview is set for Thursday and Friday in New Jersey.”

Kelly is currently the Chicago Bears assistant director of player personnel.

From 2015-16, he was the Bears’ director of pro scouting, Kelly and the Jets’ new head coach  Adam Gase were together in Denver from 2009-14.  It could be the Jets are using Kelley to satisfy the 'Rooney Rule' but his relationship with Gase makes this look like more than just a token interview.

Kelley has been a major player working with Pace to build the current roster.....

Pace brought Kelley in from Denver in 2015 and made him Director of Pro Scouting. Since he arrived the two of them have secured names like Akiem Hicks and Danny Trevathan in free agency. Last year Kelley was promoted to Assistant Director of Player Personnel.

Since then the team has enjoyed arguably its two best offseasons in over a decade. Kelley has worked closely with Pace to aquire Mitch Trubisky, Eddie Jackson, Tarik Cohen, Allen Robinson, Roquan Smith, Anthony Miller, Khalil Mack just to name a few. He played a prominent role in both the scouting and moves to secure all of those names. His finger prints are all over this roster. His importance to their success should not be understated. I would go as far as to say Kelley has essentially acted as Pace's right hand man.

Jets sign Joe Douglas of the Eagles front office to be their GM.

So, no brain drain from Pace's front office.

Hopefully this is a good thing.

I think this is a great thing, 'for the Bears'.  Remains to be seen if it's a good thing for the Jets, and of course we will never really know if Champ would have made a good GM for them or not.  I think it's also a good thing for Champ, but I'm sure he sees it as having been snubbed or looked over for a significant promotion in the ranks of the NFL and on a personal level a missed opportunity.

Based on the work done to date with the current team of Pace, Nagy, Kelly I think they have done a hell of a job building this team so far and I'm glad to see this brain trust staying in tact for at least another year.
